Welcome to Year 1

Recommended Reading for Year 1 - please click for detailed list

Year 1 teachers are Mrs Rogers and Mr Ray.

Every day, children will have lessons in reading (RML), writing and maths during the morning. In the              afternoons, we will be going on our learning adventures. Our first topic is ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’ where we will be looking at a wide range of animals and also comparing them to ourselves. After the first half term, our topic will change to ‘Dinosaur Planet’.

P.E. will be indoor on a Tuesday afternoon for both classes. Please ensure that your child has a suitable P.E. kit (a plain white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps). Outdoor Games lessons will take place on a Thursday afternoon. Your child will require their P.E. kit and trainers. As the weather gets colder, could you please provide your child with a sweatshirt and jogging bottoms.

We would recommend that you send your child with their P.E./Games kits on a Monday and take them home on a Friday, as this will help to reduce the number of children who forget to bring their kits on the correct day and sometimes there are changes to the timetable.

*Please label all uniforms, P.E. kits, lunchboxes and water bottles*

Please provide your child with a labelled, filled water bottle each morning. Your child can refill their    water bottle during the day, if required. Water bottles should be taken home every night, washed and returned the next day refilled with water.

Children are still welcome to bring in a snack for morning break time. They will be able to buy toast, crumpets or milkshakes from the school canteen. As they did in Reception, children will need to order what they would like during registration time. If children could bring their snack money in on a Monday morning for the whole week this would greatly reduce the time spent sorting out monies each morning, allowing time for our teaching assistants to provide learning opportunities during registration times. There will be a short afternoon break where the children will receive a piece of fruit. Please ensure that any snack money being brought into school is sent in a clearly labelled/sealed envelope.

Children will be given a reading book and a reading diary. Please sign their diary each time you listen to your child read. Diaries will be checked weekly and their book will be changed when required. Weekly spellings will also be stuck into your child’s reading diary. Please practice these at home as often as you can. These spellings will be tested on a weekly basis and feedback will be given in the reading diary.

How you can further help your child:

*Listen to them read as often as possible and discuss the books.

*Join a library.

*Practise counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.

*Practise quick fire mental maths questions e.g. number bonds to 10 (1 + 9, 2 + 8 etc), doubles and halves to 10+10, working out change when shopping, how many hours until bed time, days until Christmas, counting money, etc.
